College Care Packages

Finals time is fast approaching and if there is a more powerful example of a “time of trials” for a college student I can’t name it. As our college students come to the end of this school year we are planning to send each of them a care package. The package will contain some snacks, a toy or two and a lot of love. This is one tangible way we remind our college students that we love them and care for them.

Please take time this Sunday to let the church know the current address of your college student. There will be a sign up sheet on the table in the Narthex or you can email the information to fumcfairfield@gmail.com.

Thanks for continuing to support our college students in prayer.

FUMC is proud to be working with our sister churches at Jerusalem Marketplace 2010. Jones United Methodist Church and Harmony Presbyterian Church are both working with FUMC to make this a great experience for the entire community.

The imposition of ashes, symbolizing our mortality and penance, will be offered to all present at 7:15 p.m. This symbolic act marks the beginning of Lent, a 40 day season of penance and preparation before Easter.

Call for Health Kits

The United Methodist Committee on Relief has issued a call for Health Kits, which provide basic necessities to people who have been forced to leave their homes because of human conflict or natural disaster. Health kits are also used as learning tools in personal hygiene and nutrition classes. When people gain the knowledge and materials to maintain personal hygiene, their overall health improves.

Please follow the directions exactly. Include all items; do not add items that are not on the lists. Extra gifts, though given with the best of intentions, render a kit unusable and must be removed. Note: All items must be new.

Place the following items inside a sealed one-gallon plastic bag:

1 hand towel (15″ x 25″ up to 17″ x 27″)
1 washcloth
1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)
1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz. and up)
1 toothbrush (single brushes only in original wrapper, No child-size brushes)
1 large tube of toothpaste (4.5 oz. or larger, expiration date must be 6 months or longer in advance of the date of shipment to UMCOR Sager Brown)
6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages

Value: the estimated cost of all included items is $12 per kit.In a separate envelope, please send at least $1 for each kit to help UMCOR Sager Brown with the costs of processing and shipping kits around the world.

Important: Please do not include any religious, political or patriotic notes or emblems in any kit.

Please have all Completed Kits returned to FUMC Fairfield by January 31.

Serving God with Love

The New Testament word for church is ekklesia. This comes from a combination of words which mean “called out.” The church is a group of people who are called out of society into a special relationship with God and others to serve God and others. First Peter 2:10 refers to a people who “were no people but now . . . are God’s people.” The church has its identity because it is called out by God. Before we were “nobody,” but now we are “somebody” because God has called us.

The church grows because people invite people to visit and become a part of the church. God uses people to bring people. People who are absorbed in serving God create a contagious atmosphere for inviting people and encouraging others to serve.

A beautiful, biblical image of how this ministry of each person in the ekklesia functions is found in 1 Corinthians 12. Paul compares the ministry of the church to the human body. He points out the functions of the different members of the body. Each member has its own individuality, but each member finds its significance in its functional relationship to the other members of the body. The individual parts of the body function together to give cohesiveness and unity to the whole body.

Posted on this site is a listing of the elected officers of FUMC and a brief description of their duties. I know that you will pray for these persons who have accepted the responsibility of leadership. I also need you to pray and commit yourself to working with these individuals when they call for volunteers. By working together, Serving God with Love, we make the body of Christ visible to the world.
